DEWALT DCK287D2 vs DCD795D2 Review

Who hasn’t seen the ubiquitous black and yellow power tools at practically every job site? There’s a reason for that: DeWalt has a reputation for rugged tools with plenty of power. Let’s look at these two drill kits to see which one will be the best for you.

When you have masonry to drill and fasten, you can’t get by with a regular drill. You need a hammer drill and an impact driver. DeWalt put them both in this kit, the DCK287D2 shown here.

Both of these tools have brushless motors. Brushless means longer lifetime, better battery efficiency, and no maintenance. Pro tools have brushless motors.

DeWalt includes two 2.0Ah capacity 20-volt Lithium-Ion batteries in this kit. They belong to the XR lineup where all have an LED fuel gauge to show you when their status. If you haven’t done much work with Li-Ion batteries, you may be surprised at how light they are compared to Ni-Cd. If the 2.0Ah capacity isn’t enough runtime for you, you can use any of the extended capacity 20V XR batteries in their place. The included rapid charger has the batteries ready to go in 35 minutes, so you can recharge on your lunch break.

The hammer drill in this kit is the DCD796. It’s light, small, and well-balanced for a hammer drill because it’s made to work in tight places. The metal ½” ratcheting chuck grips bits firmly even at the top speed of 2,000rpm. The on-board triple LED work-light serves as a stand-alone spotlight because it has an option to stay lit for up to 20 minutes. The only thing missing on this drillis a side handle to help grip it on tough jobs.

The ¼” impact driver is the DCF887. It also has a 3-LED work-light, but it has just a 20-second delay before its light shuts down. You can change the bits in the DCF887 with one hand—just slide back the sleeve and pop in the bit. It has three transmission speeds for the best control over driving fasteners, and a variable speed trigger for precision work.

The DCD795D2 kit featured here does not include an impact driver like the DCK287D2 kit described above. It comes with only a hammer drill and accessories.

The hammer drill is the DCD795. It’s a tiny bit longer back to front than the hammer drill in the previous kit, but it weighs the same (3.6 pounds). It hits the same maximum speed of 2000rpm with its two-speed transmission. The biggest difference between the DCD795 and the DCD796 in the prior kit is the work-light. The DCD795 is the older model drill and it comes with the simpler LED light with a 20-second shutdown delay. It doesn’t work as a standalone spotlight. But it’s mounted in the foot of the drill so it doesn’t cast shadows on the spot you’re drilling.

It has a ½” metal ratcheting chuck and a brushless motor for durability and long life. The 14 clutch settings help you find the right amount of torque for the job at hand. At maximum power, the DCD795 hammers out 34,000bpm (blows per minute) which means drilling rock is a breeze.

Like the other kit, this one includes two Lithium-Ion 20V 2.0Ah batteries from the XR series. This means they have a fuel gauge that indicates when they’re full or needing a charge. The included charger takes less than an hour to refill them.

If you’re shopping for only a hammer drill, check out the DCD795D2 kit. It’s been very popular because it’s light and powerful.
