DEWALT DCK299D1T1 20V MAX FLEXVOLT Brushless Premium Hammer Drill and Impact Combo Kit

The DEWALT DCK299D1T1 FLEXVOLT kit is perfect if you have other DEWALT cordless power tools, or plan to begin building your collection with them. The FLEXVOLT battery is an excellent innovation. It’s compatible with 20-volt MAX tools as well as ones that run on 60V and 120V MAX batteries. And when you’re running a 20V tool, you’ll get four times the normal runtime of a 20-volt battery pack. That’s excellent when you hate to stop work to recharge.

Besides the new FLEXVOLT battery, this kit contains both a hammer drill and an impact driver. Both run on brushless motors. A little side note on brushless motors: pros love them. They run longer on one charge, they run cooler, and they have more power than brushed motors do.

The DCD996 three-speed hammer drill has an all metal transmission so you can power through masonry as fast as possible. The ½-inch nitro-carburized metal chuck keeps a firm grip on bits. That’s good because the DCD996 is rated for up to 820 unit-watts-out of power and a max no-load speed of 2000rpm.

It’s on the small side for a hammer drill, measuring only 8.4-inches back to front and weighing just 4.7 pounds. It comes with a molded ergonomic grip and a removable 360-degree rotatable side handle. Plus, it has three LED lights to light up the area where you’re drilling.

If for some reason you need to do regular drilling, you can turn off the hammer function to sink screws and so forth. But you may want to turn to the DCF887 impact driver in this kit instead. It’s a classic tool that you’ll find in a lot of contactors’ toolboxes.

The DCF887 driver is a lot smaller and lighter than the hammer drill. It weighs just 2.65 pounds without the battery, and measures 5.3 inches back-to-front.You can use 1-inch long hex shank bits with it when you work in really tight spaces. But don’t be deceived–it has a lot of power for its diminutive size. The brushless motor puts out an impressive 1825 inch-pounds of torque at speeds up to 3250rpm with 3600 impacts-per-minute.

Like the DCD996 hammer drill, the driver has a 3-speed transmission and a variable-speed trigger for precision work. In fact, if you need serious precision work, you can get great control by putting it in first gear and taking it slow with light pressure. The three LED lights around the chuck will help you see where you’re working if it’s dark. They have a 20-second delay before they shut down, so it’s a little like having a flashlight on the job.

DEWALT DCK299M2 20V MAX XR Lithium Ion Brushless Premium Hammerdrill& Impact Driver Combo Kit, 4.0 Ah by DEWALT

A quick look at the names of the tools included in this kit will show you that they are the same ones that are in the kit above. Both the DCD996 hammer drill and the DCF887 impact driver are here. The real difference between the two kits is the charger and the battery. In this case, the tools come with two individual 4.0Ah 20V MAX batteries instead of just the one FLEXVOLT battery. Check out the recommendation below to help you choose which kit is best for you.

Recommendation

Let’s say you have a 60V or 120V DEWALT cordless tool like a circular saw or joist drill. If they use the FLEXVOLT battery, you could gain by adding another to your collection if you buy the DCK299D1T1 kit. FLEXVOLT is compatible with 20V MAX tools as well as the higher voltage ones.

If you aren’t using high voltage cordless tools, you may be better off investing in the DCK299M2 kit because it comes with two long-life 4.0Ah batteries. Those batteries work with other 20V MAX DEWALT tools.
