DEWALT DWD115K 8 Amp 3/8-Inch VSR Mid-Handle Grip Drill Kit with Keyless Chuck

The DWD115K has been keeping builders happy since DeWalt released it in February 2008. Reviews from satisfied users point out that this drill is very durable and powerful. Some are surprised at how quiet it is compared to similar drills in its class.

The powerful 8.0Amp motor puts out up to 650 watts and up to 2500rpm. The VSR in the tool’s description means “variable speed reversible.” Pressure on the trigger controls the speed, the switch above the trigger controls the direction, and there is just one gear, nothing complicated.

Part of the drill’s durability comes from its all ball-bearing construction, and the all-metal keyless ratcheting chuck. Although it is labeled as a 3/8” chuck, the drill can handle up to 1 inch in wood with a spade bit, or 1-1/8” with a hole saw.

The main difference between the DWD115K and the DWD110K described below is the design of their handles. The DWD115K has a mid-handle grip. This means the weight of the motor is balanced more in the center of the tool. This is great for avoiding fatigue and ideal for users who have trouble holding a pistol-grip drill level.

Speaking of levels, this drill has two of them: a bubble mounted on top and one at the back. This makes it easy to see if the drill is perfectly vertical or horizontal. The body is made of hard plastic with a rubber non-slip grip, and the hook on top serves to store the tool out of the way.

Something to note: DeWalt mentions in their manual that the motors on these drills are made to stop if the brushes wear out to avoid damage to the drill and injury to the user.

As mentioned above, there is really only one difference between the DWD110K and the DWD115K–their handle style. The DWD110K is made for users who prefer a pistol grip for their drills. This is the more familiar design that most builders have seen and used over the years.

Just like the other drill above, the DWD110K has a durable body of hard plastic with a non-slip rubber grip. The build is rugged, with all-metal ball bearings and an all-metal keyless ratcheting chuck. DeWalt mentions in their manual that the motors on these drills are made to stop if the brushes wear out to avoid damage to the drill and injury to the user.

The DWD110K is VSR, or variable speed reversible. Pressure on the trigger controls the rpm and the tiny switch above the trigger reverses the spin direction. The 3/8” chuck can handle up to a 1” spade bit in wood and a 1-1/8” hole saw. For drilling metal, it is limited to just 3/8” with a twist bit.The 8.0Amp motor puts out up to 650 watts out of power and runs up to 2500rpm, plenty of power for regular drilling and driving tasks.

One final touch: there are two spirit bubble levels, one on top and one on the back, to make it easy to see if the drill is perfectly vertical or horizontal.

Recommendation

Generally speaking, you probably don’t make a tool buying decision based on what kind of carrying case it has, so choosing between a soft bag and a hard case is moot. What matters in deciding between these two drills is the grip.

If you prefer a traditional-style pistol grip, get the DWD110K.

If you prefer the tool’s weight to be balanced in the center, go with the DWD115K. This may save you some wrist and hand fatigue if you’re not used to drilling, or if you have a large project to complete.
