Makita XT248 vs LXT239 Review

When it comes to power tools, Makita ranks among one of the top brands.  Their tools have become a name you can trust and in this comparison guide we examine two of their 2 piece combo tool kits.  The LXT239 and the XT248 both feature a cordless impact driver and hammer drill and both come with a carrying case.

Makita LXT239

First up is the LXT239 18V combo pack that features a lithium-ion battery.  The impact driver and hammer drill in this kit are both proven powerful tools to tackle almost any job.  From construction to home improvement and automotive, these tools are up for the task.

The tools in this kit feature:

  • Efficient BL™ Brushless motor that is electronically controlled to maximize battery efficiency to use up to 50% longer than other batteries
  • Variable 2-speed ½” hammer driver drill that runs 0-400 and 0-1500 RPM speeds and provides 400 in.lbs of Max Torque weighing in at only 3.9lbs
  • Variable speed impact driver that provides 0-2,500 RPM and 0-3,200 IPM speeds that delivers 1,420 in.lbs of Max Torque weighing in at only 3.4 lbs
  • LXT Lithium-Ion battery and a rapid Optimum Charger that produces 430% total lifetime work with 3x more cycles

The motor eliminates carbon brushes and is designed to run cooler and more efficiently for a longer life.  The motor uses energy to match the torque and RPM to the varying demands of each job.  The battery provides a 5x lower self-discharge and 16 firm holding contact terminals for constant high power.  The charger communicates with the battery’s built in chip throughout the charging process to ensure battery life is optimal by actively controlling the current, temperature, and voltage.  The charger model is DC18RA and has multiple charging levels and error displays in case of an error during charge.

Similar to the LXT239, this combo tool kit features a carrying case, lithium ion battery, impact driver, and hammer driver.  This is a slightly tougher version with a couple of slight differences.  These differences will be examined after the feature list.

The tools in this kit feature:

  • Efficient BL™ Brushless motor that is electronically controlled to maximize battery efficiency to use up to 50% longer than other batteries
  • Variable 2-speed ½” hammer driver drill that runs 0-400 and 0-1550 RPM speeds and provides 530in.lbs of Max Torque weighing in at only 3.9lbs
  • 3 stage LED gauge that indicates the battery charge level
  • Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) that is engineered for increased dust and water resistance for operation in harsh jobsite conditions
  • Variable speed impact driver that offers 0-2,500 RPM and 0-3,200 IPM speeds at 1,420 in.lbs of Max Torque weighing in at only 3.4 lbs

The brushless motor is designed to electronically control the battery energy use to save you up to 50% of the battery life over other traditional lithium-ion batteries.  The motor is also designed to run cooler and more efficiently for a longer life.  The battery charger model is DC18RC which has multiple charging levels to show you any battery charge error and when the battery is charging and ready.

Recommendation

While both of these tool kits offer similar tools, there are a couple of slight differences between them.  The first major difference is that the impact driver and hammer driver with the XT248 kit offer Extreme Protection Technology which means these tools are water proof and dust proof to a point.  This is a great point to keep in mind if working in damp or dusty work conditions.  If you are in a hot and humid environment this is definitely the better option to buy between the two.  The price difference between these two kits is not enough to make cost an issue as they are both very close in price range.  The hammer drill in the XT248 runs at a slightly higher RPM rate at 1,550 over the 1,500 RPM rate with the LXT239’s hammer drill.  Both impact drivers operate at the same RPM and IPM rates and both weigh the same as well.  Because of the dust and water protection available, the XT248 model may offer the better value.
